The Post- graduate departments of Punjabi and English organised an extension lecture “Ferdinand de Saussure and Contemporary Literary Theory” on 11 February 2023. Prof. Dr. Gurpal singh (Deptt. of Punjabi, Evening Studies and Academic Head, Deptt. of Guru Nanak Sikh Studies, Panjab University Chandigarh) was the keynote speaker for the day.
Principal, Dr. Sameer Sharma welcomed Prof. Gurpal Singh with a bouquet of flowers and highlighted the importance of holding lectures on such pertinent topics. He also lauded the endeavours of the organising departments. Dr. Kiranjit Kaur, HoD Punjabi commenced the session by introducing the keynote speaker.
In his session, Prof. Gurpal Singh focused upon Ferdinand de Saussure who is acknowledged as the founder of modern linguistics and semiology. Saussure is also known for having laid the groundwork for structuralism and post-structuralism. Prof. Gurpal Singh apprised students about the three of Saussure’s terms: ‘speech,’ ‘language,’ and ‘speaking,’ or ‘langage,’ ‘langue,’ and ‘parole’ respectively.
Asst. Prof. Nidhi Sood, HoD English moderated the entire event. She thanked the keynote speaker, the college principal and the college managing committee. Dr. Gulshan Kumar, Mr. Ajay Kumar, Mr. Pardeep Singh, Mr. Ranjit Singh, Ms. Randeep Kaur, Ms. Sunita Rani, Ms. Paramjit Kaur, Ms. Taniya, Ms. Chahat and Ms. Shikha were also present.
