The English Literary Society in collaboration with Punjabi Sahitya Sabha and department of Sanskrit commemorated World Theatre Day on March 27, 2023. Asst. Prof. Nidhi Sood, Head, department of English commenced the event with a warm welcome of the college principal, Dr. Sameer Sharma. Sharing her views on the history of theatre, she stated that for centuries, theatre and drama have been the most popular art form and each age had its own mode of expression and theatrics in place. While addressing the students, principal Dr. Sameer Sharma highlighted the history of the theatre and importance of theatre to enhance and appreciate their role in the field of entertainment and in one’s life.
Dr. Gopi Sharma, Head, department of Sanskrit enlightened students about the origin of Indian classical drama. He delved deep into the life and works of Kalidasa, also known as Indian Shakespeare. Dr. Kiranjit Kaur, Head, department of Punjabi talked about the indispensability of theatre in every aspect of life. She also appreciated the crucial role media and technology have played in putting forward the different nuances of theatrical production through the process of infotainment. Highlighting the importance of drama, Dr. Gulshan Kumar talked at length about the role it plays in learning literacy skills— to learn languages as well as to develop reading and speaking skills.
On this occasion, a movie adaptation of Kalidasa’s famous drama “Abhigyan Shakuntalam” which is also prescribed in the syllabus of MA 2 English, was shown to the students. The event was followed by a discussion during which some insightful questions were put forward by students. Altogether it was a scintillating event that lifted everyone’s spirit to a high level. The event ended with a formal vote of thanks proposed by Asst. Prof. Tarandeep Kaur. Asst. Prof. Rupinderjeet Kaur, Asst. Prof. Ajay, Asst. Prof. Pardeep Singh, Asst. Prof. Ranjit Singh, and other faculty members from the department of English and Punjabi were also present there.
