The Department of Biology, in collaboration with the Red Ribbon and Youth Club of Swami Premanand Mahavidyalaya, Mukerian, organized an awareness program on the occasion of World Cancer Day 2025. The event was themed “United by Unique,” emphasizing the importance of individualized, patient-centered care in the fight against cancer.
The program commenced with an inaugural address by Principal Dr. Sameer Sharma, who appreciated the initiative and highlighted the urgent need to remain vigilant against life-threatening diseases like cancer. He stressed the significance of early detection, awareness, and preventive measures in combating such critical health issues.
Prof. Anuradha, In-charge of the Red Ribbon and Youth Club, spoke about the objective of the event—to raise awareness among students about cancer, its causes, prevention, and the role young individuals can play in spreading knowledge within their communities.
On this occasion, Dr. Gurpreet Kaur, Head, Department of Biology, delivered an insightful session, sharing key information related to cancer. Her presentation focused on the risk factors, symptoms, early detection strategies, and preventive measures, encouraging students to adopt a health-conscious lifestyle.
To further sensitize students, a video presentation highlighted the new initiatives and schemes introduced in the 2025 budget for cancer patients. This informative segment provided valuable insights into government efforts to support cancer prevention, treatment, and patient care.
Adding to the session’s impact, Prof. Tarandeep Kaur, Assistant Professor, Post Graduate Department of English, presented an inspiring case study of a cancer survivor. Through this real-life example, she guided students on how awareness, early intervention, and staying vigilant can significantly improve health outcomes and enhance survival rates in cancer cases.
As part of the event, a poster-making competition was organized, where students showcased their creativity and understanding of cancer awareness through thought-provoking posters. The entries were evaluated by Prof. Rupinder Jit Kaur and Prof. Mandeep Kaur, who appreciated the students’ innovative ideas and efforts.
Principal Dr. Sameer Sharma took a keen interest in the posters, interacting with the participants, providing feedback, and encouraging them to continue spreading awareness beyond the classroom. The interactive session was both engaging and motivational, with students expressing their commitment to sensitizing society and contributing to the welfare of their communities.
In conclusion, Prof. Anuradha and Dr. Gurpreet Kaur extended their heartfelt gratitude to the SPN College Management Committee and Principal Dr. Sameer Sharma for their unwavering support in making the event a success.
