The Department of Home Science and Fashion Designing organized a vibrant event-cum-workshop on Tie and Dye, bringing together creativity, skill development, and entrepreneurial learning. The workshop aimed to introduce students to the traditional art of fabric dyeing while encouraging innovation and self-employment opportunities.
The programme was conducted under the able guidance of Principal Dr. Sameer Sharma, who motivated the students to enhance their creative abilities and practical skills. He appreciated the sincere efforts of the Department of Home Science and Fashion Designing for organizing such a meaningful activity, especially in connection with the festive spirit of Holi, thereby making the celebration more creative and culturally enriching. He also emphasized the importance of skill-based learning in higher education, stating that such workshops provide students with valuable practical exposure beyond classroom learning. He encouraged students to draw inspiration from such activities and develop a spirit of innovation, self-reliance, and entrepreneurship, reminding them that even small creative skills can grow into meaningful career opportunities when nurtured with dedication and passion.
Prof. Harpreet Kaur, Head, Department of Home Science and Fashion Designing, introduced the concept of the event and elaborated on the objectives behind organizing such an innovative workshop. In her address, she highlighted that the art of tie and dye is a traditional textile technique deeply rooted in Indian culture, known for its vibrant patterns and artistic expression. She emphasized that reviving and promoting such traditional crafts among students is essential for preserving the country’s rich cultural heritage.
She further explained that the primary aim of the workshop was not only to familiarize students with the basic techniques of tie and dye but also to encourage them to explore their creative potential and practical skills. Through hands-on participation, students learned how simple fabrics can be transformed into attractive and marketable products through creativity and proper technique. She also encouraged students to view such creative crafts as potential entrepreneurial ventures, where they can design and produce handmade products such as dupattas, scarves, and garments and even market them independently.
The workshop was effectively moderated by Prof. Monika Saini, who demonstrated the basic techniques of tie and dye. She explained various patterns, colour combinations, and fabric-tying methods used to create unique and attractive designs. Students enthusiastically participated in the hands-on activity and learned how simple fabrics can be transformed into beautiful artistic pieces.
Adding a unique dimension to the event, an entrepreneurial component was also included. Students prepared a variety of cuisines and set up stalls, giving them practical exposure to the concept of “Earn While You Learn.” Through these stalls, students not only showcased their culinary skills but also experienced the basics of small-scale entrepreneurship by earning through their efforts.
A variety of tie and dye dupattas and clothing items prepared by the students were beautifully displayed, reflecting their creativity and newly acquired skills. The vibrant colours and innovative designs attracted great appreciation from the audience. Ms. Jyoti Mehra actively assisted in the successful conduct and coordination of the event.
Overall, the workshop proved to be a highly enriching and engaging experience, blending creativity, skill development, festive celebration, and entrepreneurship. The dedicated efforts of the Department of Home Science and Fashion Designing were widely appreciated for providing students with a platform to learn, create, and explore new opportunities.
