The Department of Biology at Swami Premanand Mahavidyalaya, Mukerian organized Awareness Programmes on the occasion of International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer 2023 under the theme “Montreal Protocol: fixing the ozone layer and reducing climate change.” The event commenced with a welcome of Principal Dr. Sameer Sharma by the faculty of the Department of Biology. Principal Dr. Sameer Sharma appreciated the awareness campaign to sensitize the general population regarding the preservation of the ozone layer. He encouraged the students to work for welfare of the society and guide the people all around about such matters whose negative effects can be either eliminated or minimized with certain precautions. Dr. Gurpreet Kaur, Head Department of Biology further illustrates the historical background of the ozone hole, it’s causes, negative impact on health of the people and also discussed the various precautionary approaches which if followed by each one can be helpful in saving the mother earth from the negative effects of such man made disasters. During this awareness campaign the students of the Department of Biology participated in Quiz Competition, Rangoli making, Poster making and Slogan writing competitions. The students also gave power point presentations and speeches to spread the awareness on the dangers of the depleting ozone layer.Prof.Rekha Rani illucidated the chemical background of the ozone hole and describes the various chemical reactions responsible for the ozone hole and it’s effects. The entire event was coordinated by Prof. Meenu and Prof. Isha. Dr. Anjana Dadhwal and Prof. Sonia Aggarwal judged the posters prepared by the students. The slogan writing competition was judged by Dr. Amrinder Kaur and Prof. Rekha Rani. Prof. Shaina Parmar judges the Rangoli’s made by the students.The events were successfully conducted by support of Ms. Paramjit Kaur. The quiz was conducted by Dr. Gurpreet Kaur. The winners of all the activities were felicitated by certificates. Palak Manhas, Disha and Mangalpreet Singh were the winners of the Slogan writing competition. Anshika, Khushpreet and Simran won the Poster making competition. The group comprising Shweta, Simran and Konica were the winners of Rangoli competition. Komal stood first and Avneet second in the power point presentations. Pooja won the speech competition.The event concluded by vote of thanks and expression of gratitude by Dr. Gurpreet Kaur towards Principal Dr. Sameer Sharma and the College Managing Committee whose kind support and encouragement has motivated the Department to organize such awareness campaigns.
